Best Sleeping Positions for Back Pain Relief

In this article, we'll explore some of the best sleeping positions to help with back pain, so you can get the rest you need to feel your best.

  1. Sleeping on your back

One of the best sleeping positions for people with back pain is sleeping on your back. This position allows your spine to rest in a neutral position, which can help alleviate pressure and reduce pain. To make this position even more comfortable, place a small pillow under your knees to help support your lower back.

  1. Sleeping on your side

If you prefer to sleep on your side, you can still find relief from back pain. When sleeping on your side, it's important to keep your spine aligned. To do this, place a pillow between your knees to help support your hips and lower back. You may also want to place a small pillow under your waist to help keep your spine in a neutral position.

  1. Sleeping in a fetal position

For some people, sleeping in a fetal position can help alleviate back pain. To sleep in this position, simply curl up on your side with your knees pulled up towards your chest. This position can help relieve pressure on your spine and reduce pain. However, it's important to make sure you're not curling up too tightly, as this can cause additional pain.

  1. Sleeping on your stomach (worst sleeping position… especially for the neck)

While sleeping on your stomach may not be the best position for people with back pain, it can still be done with a few adjustments. If you prefer to sleep on your stomach, try placing a pillow under your lower abdomen and pelvis to help support your lower back. You may also want to use a flatter pillow for your head to help keep your neck in a neutral position.Reminder… this is not a great position for the neck!

  1. Avoiding twisting or bending

No matter what position you sleep in, it's important to avoid twisting or bending your spine. This can put additional pressure on your back and exacerbate your pain. When getting in and out of bed, try to use your arms and legs to move your body rather than twisting or bending.
