Chiropractic care can have numerous benefits to your body and way of life, but did you know it could even help lower your blood pressure? Chiropractic care is known for its holistic approach to treating conditions in your body without the use of medication. That’s why many people who experience high blood pressure seek a chiropractor's help.
In today’s article, we’ll explore the benefits chiropractic care can have on your blood pressure.
Chiropractic care and high blood pressure
According to a study published by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, “high blood pressure is a major public health concern because it is a very common condition and a leading risk factor for other conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, stroke, chronic kidney disease, and cognitive decline.”
People with high blood pressure often seek out medications as a form of treatment, and though medicine can help with a plethora of conditions, it can also offer a long list of side effects.
In 2007, a study found that receiving an atlas adjustment, the first vertebra in the spinal column, can help lower blood pressure. The placebo-controlled study tested the benefits of an atlas vertebra adjustment on 25 patients with high blood pressure, and the other 25 underwent a sham chiropractic adjustment.
After eight weeks of consistent adjustments, the patients with high blood pressure and who underwent the atlas adjustment experienced significantly lower blood pressure than their counterparts.
Not everyone needs an adjustment to their atlas vertebra, but to know for sure, it’s best to schedule an appointment so one of our doctors at ProActive Health can conduct an exam to see if an atlas vertebra, is restricted and out of alignment .
