More than 39 million Americans suffer from migraines, and if you’re a woman, you are three times more likely to have a migraine than if you were a man.

Migraines are painful and can disrupt your life by either calling out of work, missing events or simply dealing with the pain. Doctors will often prescribe medication to treat migraines, but as with any prescription drug, they come with a long list of potential side effects.

In today’s article, we’ll discuss ways to treat migraines without using prescription drugs.

Home Remedies

Migraines can sprout out of nowhere and often at the most inconvenient times. However, you can do a few things on your own to try and alleviate any pain or discomfort you’re feeling.

Scalp Massage

Massaging your scalp can help in relieving tension and pressure. Additionally, the massage will help increase blood circulation, which can help relieve pain.

Take Time to Sleep

Having too much or even too little sleep can trigger migraines. To help prevent future migraines, it’s important to implement good sleep habits. Instead of scrolling through your phone right before bed or watching one more episode of your favorite show, try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. A nap can also help in fighting off a migraine. If you feel a migraine coming on, try to lie down and get some extra rest.

Use Cold Compresses

Cold compresses are great for a wide range of things, especially migraines. Get a bag of ice or frozen peas and wrap it inside a towel. Once the bag is wrapped, press it against your temple or neck for 10 minutes and then take a break. After about 15 minutes, you can place the bag back on your temple or neck.

Chiropractic Care for Migraines

Even though migraines have no cure, when it comes to managing migraines, chiropractic care is always the answer.

Now, depending on the severity of your migraine, our chiropractors may recommend soft tissue therapy, spinal adjustments , and/or lifestyle changes. Soft tissue therapy can include a targeted massage that offers relief to the affected areas. As the name suggests, spinal adjustments focuses on applying pressure to the joints within your spine, and often times there  is built up tension or a misalignment that needs to be addressed.
