A study from 2014 by Annals of Family Medicine found that receiving a regular therapeutic massage two or three times a week aided in relieving chronic pain better than no massage or fewer massage sessions.

In today’s article, we’ll explore the benefits of muscle therapy for relieving pain.

What is muscle therapy?

Muscle therapy is one of the best ways to reduce pain in your muscles therapeutically. When treated by a Licensed Massage Therapist,  the odds of increasing functional use of your muscles increases.

Types of muscle therapy

When it comes to muscle therapy, there are a few approaches that you can take to address your pain and set yourself up for optimal recovery.

Massage therapy

Massage therapy is the practice of providing hands-on movement  to enhance your well-being and soft tissue. Massage targets many areas: your connective tissue, such as the fascia, your tendons and ligaments, and of course, your muscles.

Assisted stretching

Let’s face it, when has stretching ever felt bad? Stretching is one of the most effective ways to reduce muscle tightness, improve flexibility, decrease stress levels, improve your athletic performance, and increase your range of motion.

What is assisted stretching? At times doing a stretching routine on your own doesn’t allow you to pinpoint areas of weakness. Knowing this, having someone like Dr. Doug or Dr. Mike at ProActive Health to help guide you through a stretching session can do wonders in reaching those areas of weakness and tightness.

Shockwave therapy

Extracorporeal focused shockwave therapy has been clinically proven to treat people who experience chronic pain in their bodies. More specifically, it's a form of physical therapy targeting deeper conditions such as plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff pains, gluteal muscles/tendons, tendonitis, shoulder pain, knee pain, deep trigger points, etc.

Shockwave therapy uses a special device to transmit high energy acoustic waves to stimulate your body’s cells and its intrinsic healing mechanism. The waves then break up calcium, scar tissue deposits, boost new blood vessel formation and metabolism, and activate your body’s natural healing process.
